Safety

Safety is a top priority for GM and we are working to be the industry leader in all safety compliance and consumer ratings.

Numerous departments within GM, including Public Policy, work directly with policymakers throughout the country as well as federal regulators at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to ensure safe vehicles and roadways for all.

Despite improvement in roads and vehicles, driver behaviors are still factors in 94% of fatal crashes, including lack of seat belt use (48%), impairment (28%), speeding (27%) and distraction (10%).

Distracted driving, the safe deployment of self-driving vehicles, passenger safety and product cybersecurity are all top policy issues for GM. We have advocated for strong safety legislation on the state and federal levels, including 2016’s HOT CARS legislation in Congress that will help to reduce child fatalities due to being left in overheated vehicles. GM is also the first automaker to have a Rear Seat Reminder feature in its vehicles to remind parents and caretakers of backseat occupants when turning off their vehicle.

GM also works with educational organizations like Safe Kids Worldwide, Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), and The National Safety Council (NSC) to ensure that vehicle safety awareness reaches as many people as possible.
